A new book reveals the Texas town?s edgy architectural spirit
When the renowned artist Donald Judd fled the crowded streets of New York for the stark desert landscapes of Marfa in the 1970s, few could have predicted the Texas town?s emergence as a destination for artists and aesthetes alike. But in the 40-some years since then, that?s just what Marfa has become. The creative classes who have made their homes in the quirky enclave have taken a page out of Judd?s book, devising unique dwellings that celebrate their surroundings while offering a distinct point of view. In the new book?Marfa Modern: Artistic Interiors of the West Texas High Desert?(The Monacelli Press, $50), out October 25, writer Helen Thompson and photographer Casey Dunn have collected 21 residences that boldly convey the region?s multifaceted personality, from minimalist boxes made with cinderblocks and rammed earth to repurposed filling stations to modernist cabins. Here, eight homes that capture the spirit of Marfa in all its idiosyncratic splendor.
