Palm Springs Reimagined:

A Mid-Century Jewel with Star-Studded History

Nestled on a quiet, circular street in Palm Springs—where each home reflects the charm of 1950s mid-century architecture—a modest house has been given new life. Once owned by Cher’s sister, this small gem carried a legacy of glamour, nostalgia, and potential. Tasked with reimagining the space, interior designer Barbara Hill leaned fully into its history while opening it up for contemporary living.

From the beginning, it was clear this house had good bones, but tight rooms and closed-off spaces made it feel far smaller than it needed to be. The first major move? Removing a wall to create an open, breathable living area. This transformation not only introduced flow but provided the perfect canvas for a striking mid-century divider—sourced at the annual Modernism Week show in Palm Springs. It’s a sculptural moment that bridges the eras with style and intention.

A visual homage to the home’s storied past comes through in an unexpected way: a bold image of Cher in full headdress, selected by Barbara Hill as a subtle nod to the home’s unique provenance. It hangs proudly, anchoring the space with star power and a wink to the 1970s.

Original elements were lovingly preserved where possible. The living room sofa, an authentic 1950s piece, was recovered rather than replaced—maintaining the soul of the home while giving it a fresh twist. Overhead, a Venetian glass chandelier sourced from Houston Modern casts a soft, ambient glow, marrying Hollywood glam with European craftsmanship.

The design plays with texture and depth throughout. At the bar, three-dimensional tiles add architectural interest and tactile contrast. Underfoot, new terrazzo flooring was poured to echo the retro roots of the home, now sparkling with renewed energy.

This Palm Springs project is a love letter to mid-century design—thoughtfully edited, respectfully modernized, and filled with stories. In Barbara Hill’s hands, the past isn’t just preserved—it’s celebrated.
